The ever rising tuition costs for higher education in South Africa has been a thorn in the flesh of the country. Regardless of the fact that most of us are unaware of the actual amount paid in the higher institutions, we’re certain the cost is outrageously high and always increasing. Even the ruling party is with us on the issue for in its recent 2015 National General Council, the party agreed that the higher education department must come up with a policy to curtail the growth of tuition cost in the higher education sector.

And with the recent three-days mass protest organized by the Student Representative Council at the University of the Witwatersrand over a proposed 10.5 percent increase in fees come 2016, which was shortly followed by another protest at Rhodes University over tuition cost, the deputy Cyril Ramaphosa reaffirmed that the fees are high, and called for affordable tertiary fees to ensure a sustained development, “greater access to the poor, poor working class and even middle class families.”

While anyone inclined to find fault with the government will question who they’re calling on to make the tertiary fee affordable when the masses are looking up to them for solution, the uncritical questions are: “What’s the exact cost of tertiary education in South Africa? How much are our students paying to get educated in our universities? Which of our universities is most expensive? The answers to those question are as presented below.

Registration FeesLet’s commence with the registration fees which is as well-known as upfront tuition payment. Based on the recent fees listed on the various websites of the universities, the upfront tuition payment in our universities for 2015 and 2016 are as represented below.

Meanwhile the upfront tuition for the University of Fort Hare wasn’t included as their fee is unavailable on their website when this report was compiled.

Now, lets take a look at how much the students are paying for Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Arts and Social Sciences and Bachelor of Science in the universities for 2015 and 2016.
